Canalside Cottages are former lock keeper and canal worker’s cottages located on the banks of Scottish canals. Each of these unique heritage properties has been restored by Scottish Canals, working in partnership with the Vivat Trust, a registered charity and national building preservation trust.
Each restoration we undertake is sensitive to the history of these incredibly important builings. By securing third party funding, we have been able to restore period features and bring these cottages back into productive use as high quality self catering holiday accommodation.
As well as securing the long term future of the buildings, our work ensures the cottages remain in public ownership, so anyone can enjoy their unique qualities and understand more about their relationship with the canal.
Scottish Canals look after the Scottish canals, conserving them as part of our heritage, and transforming them to play a vital role in Scotland today. We aim to showcase best practice in environment and heritage management on the Scottish canal network.
Scottish Canals is an operating name of the British Waterways Board, a stand alone public body. We have been tasked by the Scottish Government to generate income, so that we can be self-funding, as least in part. The rental income we make from our holiday cottages will help us achieve this, and ensure we can continue to look after Scotland’s canals for future generations to enjoy.
